C. Agardh é o segundo lançamento do duo formado por Renê Freire ao piano e Thelmo
Cristovam no saxofone, e mais um produto vindo do caldeirão maciço de sons que paira pouco abaixo da superfície musical de Pernambuco. Renê, natural de Caruaru, formou-se em piano na UFPE onde se especializou no repertório mais contemporâneo do instrumento. Integrou brevemente o trio Adamante, com quem lançou um disco em 2017. Contrariando certos estereótipos da música contemporânea, Renê explora com frequência o lado mais melódico e sutil do instrumento. Há algum tempo vinha trabalhando em seu show solo tocando as próprias composições, e chegou a circular nos principais pontos do underground recifense.

Foi nesse meio que Renê encontrou Thelmo Cristovam. Natural de Brasília, mas residindo em Olinda há várias décadas, Thelmo é veterano do lado mais recente dessa cena. Começou a compor na virada do milênio, e em 2003 juntou seu interesse por experimentos eletroacústicos com uma pesquisa em improvisação e fundou, em parceria com Túlio Falcão, a banda Hrönir, uma das mais longevas e icônicas bandas de improvisação, ruído e gambiarra de Pernambuco. Desde então, Thelmo já lançou mais de 100 discos, entre solos & colaborações, em selos espalhados por todas as Américas, pela Europa e pela Ásia.

O encontro de Renê e Thelmo se deu no contexto do Ciclo Rumor de Arte Sonora, uma série de shows que acontece na cidade. Lá, entre shows de Hrönir e apresentações de
Thelmo sozinho ou com convidados, Renê entrou em contato e começou a parceria.
C. Agardh traz o registro ao vivo da primeira vez que o duo tocou junto, num evento em que Hrönir iria tocar em seguida, Thelmo fez uma participação no show de Renê para uma faixa improvisada. O disco é incomum para a cena recifense/pernambucana, onde predominam grupos grandes, improvisações que podem passar de uma hora e um uso pesado de equipamentos e gambiarras eletrônicas para modificar o som do instrumento. C Agardh, com suas duas faixas, mal ultrapassa a fronteira dos 12 minutos e os protagonistas são apenas o piano e o sax sem processamentos. O som remete às origens sessentistas da improvisação livre e do free jazz.

O sax de Thelmo, agressivo e repleto de técnicas lentamente desenvolvida ao longo dos anos, parece respirar junto à sonoridade cheia do piano de Renê, criando um organismo paradoxal: ao mesmo tempo rarefeito pela formação pequena e de instrumentos acústicos, mas também denso pela forma enfática de tocar. Áspero e aéreo com sons estridentes e raspados do saxofone e ao mesmo tempo denso e pegajoso com os acordes de mão cheia do piano.

C. Agardh é o nome de um gênero de algas, o sargaço que é parte integrante da experiência de viver em Recife & região metropolitana como um todo e suas praias. Invisível, porém onipresente, pequenos fragmentos que formam uma massa densa e inescapável, forrando a parte mais profundo do mar habitável.

C. Agardh is the second release of the group formed by Renê Freire on the piano and Thelmo Cristovam on the saxophone, it is also made by the sonic melting pot that hoves not much deep down in the musical surface of the state of Pernambuco - Brazil. Renê was born in Caruaru-PE and got his degree in piano at the UFPE (Federal University of Pernambuco) where he has also specialized in the contemporary repertoire. He has also been a part of an album recorded in 2017 when he integrated, for a brief time, the trio Adamant. Moving on the opposite lane of the established stereotypes of contemporary music, Renê prefers to explore more frequently a subtle and melodic piano playing. For some time he frequented the most known Recife's underground venues, where he did solo performances in which he could play his own compositions.

It was around that scene that Renê met Thelmo Cristovam. Born in Brasília-DF but living for many decades in Olinda-PE, Thelmo is a "longtimer"in this somewhat new scene of Recife. He started composing in the turn of the millennium and in 2003 he linked his interest on eletroacoustics experiments with a research on improvisation and then, partnered with Túlio Falcão, founded the Hrönir, one of the oldest and most iconic noise, improvised music and gambiarra bands in the state of Pernambuco. Since then, Thelmo has already release over 100 albums, including solos & collabs through many labels throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia.

Their meeting (Renê and Thelmo) took place in the Ciclo Rumor de Arte Sonora, which was a series of concerts that happened in Recife. Between Thelmo's solo and featured performances or with Hrönir, Renê could contact him and then started the partnership. C. Agardh is the recording of the first time the duo played together, in an event which had Thelmo participating both with the duo and with the Hrönir.

C. Agardh is the name of a biological genus of seaweeds, the sargassum, which are very present in the experience of living in the city of Recife. Unseen albeit ubiquitous, they are small fragments that together form a dense and inescapable mass, quilting the shallow sea from the bottom, thus forming an intriguing but nonetheless beautiful pattern.

The album is somewhat unusual for the Recife/Pernambuco scene, because there predominates groups with a large number of members playing improvisation sessions which are long in duration and which have a predominant usage of electronic equipment and gambiarras to modify the sound of the instruments. On the other hand, C. Agardh, with its two tracks, barely surpasses the total length of 12 minutes and its performers are just a pianist and a saxophonist playing without any electronic effect or modulation whatsoever.

The overall sound of the album would bring back the sonic aspects of free jazz and free improvisation from the 1960's. Thelmo's sax, aggressive and with a plenty of techniques which were slowly developed throughout his career, seems to breathe along with the wide sounding of Renê's piano, thus creating a sort of paradoxical organism: simultaneously sparse, due to the small formation (only two acoustic instruments), and at the same time dense due to the emphatic way of playing. Harsh and airy with shrilling and scratchy sounds from the saxophone and at the same time dense and clingy with chords from a handful played piano.
